Castles

The island nations of England, Scotland and Ireland are home to some of the oldest and most famous castles in the world. The castle has had a chequered history which progressed from their early construction as a wooden Motte and Bailey castle by the Normans in the late 11th century to the massive stone fortresses that can still be seen today.

These magnificent stone castles took considerable time to build, requiring a significant labour force and they were expensive. The location of these castles was therefore carefully chosen for the most advantageous political and military purposes. These were places to impress one's friends and to entertain in a manner befitting a family of importance. The same is true of today, many of those that have survived battles, fire and the ravages of time now offer supremely comfortable exclusive use accommodation.

The nature of castles changed again in the 16th  and 17th  centuries and those that failed to withstand the onslaught of guns and cannon were replaced by heavily armed artillery forts and garrisons were introduced. They were used for accommodation and a symbol of wealth and power - designs often returned to the simple tower house castle which was cheaper to build and provided enough rooms for the nobles to live.

By the 18th century castles both within the UK and Ireland were built purely as large luxury homes and these romantic fairytale castles were designed by the likes of David Bryce in the Georgian Victorian Baronial styles. These great homes were built for luxury, not defensive purposes and are enjoyed as such still today.

Many of LTR's guests simply wish to indulge their childhood fantasies and live out their earliest memories of fairytales written around castles and those that lived there.

LTR can make those dreams come true and there is nothing like enjoying the sheer scale of these buildings and the romance and history of the place.
