Castles
England
Perhaps the first issue to address is, "what is a castle?" The English medieval castle, like its counterparts in Europe, is a strange and constantly evolving phenomenon. Most buildings are created to fulfill a specific purpose; a church, a house, a factory, a school, a bank, a hotel but a castle, depending upon the status of the man or family who occupied it, could be vicariously be a military base, a seat of government, a court or a stronghold for the surrounding region. It could be any or all of the above but in England it was principally the private residence of its owner and his family.
Today, many of the great English castles, which are as diverse in character as their many inhabitants and having stood the test of time and the ravages of long winters, stand in silent testimony to their architects and builders. English castles dot a countryside of rolling hills and green pastures, giving us glimpses of a bygone era. We are immensely proud of our castles, believing them to be an important part of the country's hugely varied heritage and culture.
They range in size from the tiny at Lindisfarne in Northumberland to the elegant Alnwick Castle dubbed the 'Windsor of the North'. Some castles have a myriad of ghosts haunting their corridors whilst other smaller English castles have been converted into proper family homes with all modern conveniences and offering a very high level of accommodation and service. There are a few that offer exclusive use castle hire with 5 star accommodation and we are well placed to advise on the most suitable.
Whether it be a ducal pile like Belvoir Castle in Rutland or a Victorian family home like Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire, there is a wonderful mix of castles for guests to experience with family or friends.
A lot of these castles are a lot less intimidating than they look and in fact surprisingly cosy and personal when you have found your way around! These castles and their owners are well used to entertaining and the castles lend themselves to large groups of family and friends, who want to have a fun time. LTR arranges everything, leaving our guests free to enjoy themselves.
