The wonderful thing about Ireland is that many of their lovely country houses and castles can be hired on a self catering basis as well as fully staffed and catered and this has opened up the market into quite an extensive and varied one.
For those looking to stay in a large country house or castle, who are prepared to fend for themselves, then Ireland should be the place to start the search. Irish owners seem to be more relaxed about allowing guests to self cater, although most will provide a housekeeper to help guests find the pots and pans and tell them where the fuse box is hidden and other vital bits of information.
In the north of the country, there are magnificent examples of fantastic self catering castles, such as Crom Castle and Belle Isle Castle, both very historic and beautiful homes in their own right and both are situated as close to Lough Erne as it is physically possible to be without getting your feet wet.
In the south we have Ross Castle with two cottages and five interconnecting apartments forming three sides of a courtyard attached to the main tower. All of these can be hired together or separately on a self-catered basis.
