Helicopter trip around Scotland

LTR Case Study No. 6

'Miami tycoon's tour of Scotland by Helicopter'

A couple of year's ago we received an unusual request from a Miami computer tycoon who had virtually unlimited resources but very limited time!

Every so often we get a really fun challenge which is when LTR really comes into its own and this trip was one of the most exacting but most fun of any we have undertaken.

THE BRIEF:

Holy Island - castleTheir request was simply - "I want to see everything in 10 days". Now Scotland is a small country but there is a lot to see and the roads are slow.  Added to this, we could tell pretty quickly that the client had a short attention span and he wanted to see a lot but quickly.  He also requested that whenever possible he and his new wife would have a private room to eat in at all hotels, restaurants and that all the properties they stayed in had 24/7 wireless internet access and that their visit should incorporate as many different outdoor activities as possible.

THE LTR SOLUTION:

Windsurfing off the Isle of Tiree, ScotlandWith this remit we set about arranging a tour of Scotland that enabled our guests to see as much of the country as possible in the allotted time and incorporating as much variety as we could pack in.  This involved private chauffeur drive cars, 2 helicopters on permanent standby and the services of one of LTR's directors all the time for their 10 day jamboree.  Their eventual visit saw them fly in on a private jet to Edinburgh and stay at the Balmoral for 2 nights, then move to the privately owned Tower of Lethendy in Perthshire for 2 nights followed by 2 nights at Skibo Castle, 2 nights at the family home Corrour Lodge near Fort William and 2 nights at Devonshire Gardens in Glasgow.

Highlights of their trip included:

  • Taking over the Witchery for dinner
  • VIP seats at the Royal Military tattoo and dinner at the Castle afterwards
  • Private tour of Floors Castle, the largest inhabited castle in Scotland and home to the Duke of Roxburghe
  • Helicopter flight down the east coast to Bamburgh and Holy Island, stopping off for a picnic lunch on a private beach in North Berwick
  • A bespoke Beating the Retreat on the lawns of Lethendy
  • Whisky blending and tasting with Ian Buxton - contributor to the Whisky magazine and respect author
  • Rendition of the Battle of Culloden by Ray Owens renowned historian and storyteller
  • Personal Highland Safari in the Perthshire hills among the golden eagles and red deer
  • 4 x 4 off roading, clay shooting and a picnic of champagne and lobsters and barbecued Scottish fillet steaks
  • Falconry display and then choppering off to the River Tummel for some white water rafting, canoeing and canyoning
  • Dinner at Andrew Fairlie's restaurant at Gleneagles
  • Up in the Monaliadth Mountains for a long run down the Spey in an inflatable canoe - picnic at Tulchan and chopper over to Mukrach for some live falconry over grouse
  • Very speedy RIB ride around Skibo Castle in the Cornoch Firth, off roading with quads and Land Rovers
  • Chopper over to Inverness for coffee at Dochfour House at the head of Loch Ness
  • A private boat trip down Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle with a brass band on board and sensational picnic
  • Dinner at the remote but hugely romantic old Railway Station at Corrour
  • Helicopter flight out to the west coast, dropping in at the Isle of Rum for elevenses before going on to SKye
  • Windsurfing and kite carting on the Isle of Tiree
  • Dinner at the Ubiquitous Chip in Glasgow
  • Helicopter to the Isle of Islay to mash, distill, blend and cask their own whisky at Bruichladdich distillery

Gorgeous country house on shores of loch ness

With a final bill of nearly £100,000 this was not a trip for the ordinary punter but one for those with deep pockets and a need for constant entertainment.  Amazingly they do a trip of this complexity half a dozen times a year around the world and usually rack up a photo library of 20,000 images per annum.  It's high octane stuff but then that's the life of the modern day tycoon!
