Built in 1780, Birkhill Castle lies on the shores of the Tay Estuary.

This castle is owned by the Earl of Dundee, whose forebear was awarded the office of hereditary Standard Bearer for Scotland by King Alexander II in the 13th Century.

His predecessors carried the Scottish Banner for William Wallace at Stirling Bridge and Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn.

This is definitely a home full of history but also great charm and style, reflecting the family's diverse interests and lively spirit.

The castle has a number of large reception rooms, generously proportioned bedrooms and lots of recently refurbished bathrooms which emphasise why the castle has long been a wonderful place for family gatherings.

The castle sits in a 2,000 acre estate, surrounded by formal gardens, woodland and walled gardens with the latter being particularly stunning housing long greenhouses filled with fruit and a heated pool in a secluded corner.

There is a long windy driveway and as you round a corner the castle comes magically into view.  St.Andrews is only 20 minutes away and Edinburgh just over an hour.

The Kingdom of Fife is of course the home of golf and within a 40 minute radius of Birkhill, you can access 100 golf courses, including the Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie, Ladybank, Elie, Crail and Kingsbarns.

Guests can also ride along local beaches, visit numerous other castles like Glamis and Kellie, explore the fishing villages of East Fife, take a boat ride out to see the puffins on the Island of May, visit the deer centre at Cupar and enjoy easy access to Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Highlands.

There is a lovely estate walk to Balmerino, through beautiful woods with a mass of flowers and shrubs and the quiet local roads are safe and fun for family bicycling.  A great estate for kids to roam!
