Boxted Hall, near London, is a 14th century moated mansion house which has been lived in by the same family for 600 years.
It was purchased during the reign of Richard II in 1392 and is set in 150 acres of park and woodland, overlooked by the family church on top of the hill. This charming mansion house has been hugely restored and now offers guests luxury accommodation and is a wonderful venue for country house weekends.
The River Glem winds its way past the back of the house and there are extensive gardens, with two magnificent walnut trees standing at the front. The estate has a very secluded feel to it but is actually only 90 minutes from central London.
On arrival, there is a large mahogany paneled hall with a huge fireplace, off which there is a large dining room, drawing room and a more informal billiards room.
Upstairs, there are 6 formal bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and 4 attic rooms which share 2 shower rooms.
The atmosphere is warm and cosy, with lovely light rooms and very comfortable décor. The main hall can seat 70 and the house really lends itself to private parties.
The owner manages the house in a relaxed but professional way and it really is the most welcoming of country houses.
Suffolk is a pretty county with some lovely rolling countryside, made famous by John Constable, who embarked on many sketching trips in the area. Close by is Lavenham, England's finest medieval village and food capital of the county. There are many other attractive towns and villages like Stoke by Nayland, all dominated by their 14th century churches and usually with a number of very good pubs.
It is a lovely area to explore and activities can be arranged in the park along with riding and fishing locally. Boxted Hall has the feel of a bygone era.
