A little to the south of the village of Auchleven, on rising ground overlooking the Gadie and sheltered by the northern flank of Bennachie, stands the small castle of Lickleyhead.

It is a house of great charm and of considerable, if unrecognised, importance, both as an almost unspoilt example of the transformation of a ‘chateau-fort’ into a ‘chateau-maison’, and as a building with strong links to the designer of Castle Fraser. It is an ideal venue for small weddings and other special events.

Very few Scottish castles can match the splendour of Lickleyhead. The old Great Hall has an impressive drawing room with huge log fire, the room is decorated in period style and furnished with antiques.

The dining room which is wood panelled sits up to 18 people (or, if split 24). The seven luxury bedrooms are beautifully decorated, five of which are double and one is a four poster. There are two twin bedrooms and all bedrooms have their own bathrooms.

If any castle can be described as being cosy then Lickleyhead can - with its thick stone walls and large open fires, comfortable furnishings and sumptuous decorations it epitomises the Scottish tower house or small castle and really lends itself to small groups and families in a way that larger castles cannot do.

Visitors are spoiled for choice when it comes to what to do in the area with an abundance of historical properties and houses, gardens, stunning countryside for walks, country pursuits, fishing and canoeing, rafting and riding to name a few.

Evenings at Lickleyhead are often enhanced by pipers, dancers, fireworks and the occasional whisky tasting which all add to the tremendous charm and timeless character of the place.
