The house is a most attractive Victorian castellated mansion situated on the Moidart peninsula on the west coast of Scotland with dramatic views over the sea.

Building commenced in 1852 by the well known artist Jemima Blackburn and her husband Hugh, a mathematics professor in Glasgow.

The Blackburns landed everything by sea, from the stone for the house, the furniture and even the soil for the garden from Ayrshire. Until the mid 1960’s there was no road.   Jemima documented the work through her paintings, many of which are still hanging in the house. During the war the house was requisitioned by the army and was used as a base for Commando training. The house was owned by the same family for 150 years, was then owned by Stewart and Lynn Blair who built the gorgeous boathouse, and then bought by the MacDonald’s in early 2007.

Rebuilt from top to bottom between early 2007 and 2010 it is extremely comfortable. The house has underfloor heating and each of the 10 fabulous bedrooms has its own bathroom. There is a beautiful drawing room and library on the first floor and a very large children’s room with ‘all the toys’. The dining room can seat 26 and has three large French windows looking out onto the sea.

There is a large and functional drying room and a ‘wet room’ with a drench shower that has a glass front and is perched on the top of the house; everyone is awestruck by this room.

The house is set in 40 acres of grounds with a huge flat lawn which is ideal for all sorts of sports and marquees and there is a recently created formal garden and hills with mature trees and a mass of azaleas and rhododendrons.

At the west end of the lawn is a large beautiful sandy beach, with an island where children can safely swim and it is unusual that anyone other than guests are on the beach. The whole bay is a complete play ground for all ages.

There is also the most delightful boathouse converted into an exquisite 1 bedroomed cottage in 2002 - it is vast. It has an enormous drawing room with an open fire, a dining room table and two bunk beds at the back. There is one double bedroom that is en-suite and during a high tide you can dip your toe in the sea without stepping off the veranda.

Travel on the steam train that was used during the making of the Harry Potter films, go over the famous Glenfinnan viaduct and watch out for Hogwarts. Great hill walking all around, within 15 miles there are at least a dozen hills of around 3000 feet, and nearby is the majestic Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest peak. There is a gorgeous three hour walk along the shore called ‘the silver walk’ from Castle Tioram to Kinloch Moidart. Glen Moidart is a lovely two hour stroll or bike ride for children. Great for watersports with plenty of Kayaks go canoeing to Arisaig and there is a RIB, 5.5 metres with a 75hp engine which can take guests to numerous deserted beaches, or waterskiers for a spin around the bay.
