A 13th Century manor house, under three hours drive from London, set in a quiet valley minutes from the M5 and overlooking the Blackdown hills. The grounds cover 7 acres and include a miniature lake with a koi pond, formal gardens, rose garden and lawns. There is a heated swimming pool, tennis court and large paddock for games and other activities.
The manor has excellent parking at the front and there is a rather stylish converted barn to the rear which sleeps 10 and is also available for rental with the manor or separately. So with the two buildings combined, this is a great venue for weekend house parties of up to 34 guests, which creates exciting opportunities for that special birthday celebration!
The manor itself dates from 1235 when Bishop Joceline of Wells exempted Gerebert, a Knight of Wellington, from paying hay taxes. Centuries later in 1924 the manor was massively modernised under the guidance of the renowned arts and crafts architect Hubert Lidbetter. Inside guests can enjoy the large sitting room, a medieval banqueting hall, spacious kitchen with seating area, games room and television snug. There are 11 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, 5 shower rooms and a sauna with a separate shower room. The manor retains a lot of the medieval character with dark wood paneling and lots of wonderful old floor boards, stained glass and heavy beams.
The surrounding area is rich in history and plentiful in activities to keep guests busy during their stay. These include quad biking, paint balling, clay, laser and pistol shoots and horse riding. Close by is Taunton and the famous Somerset County Cricket Club, as is the Wookey Hole Caves and the Sheppys Cider Museum, along with the Fleet Air Museum and Cricket St Thomas Wildlife Park. Exmoor is not far away and the north coast of Somerset is stunning countryside to explore with famous old towns like Lynemouth and Lynton, where Coleridge and Wordsworth wrote their famous poems. The south west of England is a very special area which draws you back with its rural charm, narrow lanes and patchwork quilt of small valleys.
