Winton lands predate the Magna Carta; the Setons built the House before Leonardo da Vinci established his reputation.
Their architect, the King's Master Mason, did not work on ordinary castles! His carved, twisted chimneys herald a palace within and his ornate plaster ceilings are the most elaborate in Scotland.
This is a home offering luxury accommodation and exclusive use on a grand scale. It is far from cold, its grandeur is not aloof and you are welcomed warmly. Up to 16 people can sleep in the House, and 26 more can stay in the two 4 and 5 star self catering farmhouses.
Corporate responsibility and sustainability are at the heart of the management of the Estate. There are some wonderful, large reception rooms and its a house well used to hosting fun parties.
Winton was built by the Setons in 1150 and a grandson married the sister of King Robert 'The Bruce' of Scotland. In the sixteenth century, Henry VIII had Winton burnt down in an effort to impress Mary Queen of Scots, and Mary Seton was later her Lady-in-Waiting.
The Seton's tenure lasted until 1715 when they backed the Jacobites and the Earl of Winton was taken to the Tower of London. In the absence of the Earl but in his name, Winton was requisitioned by Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745 when his rebel army camped on Winton Estate. The Hamilton Nisbets, who bought the Estate, likened it to one of the greatest inheritances of the 18th and 19th centuries.
The furnishings came from all over Europe and the Turkish Empire. Golf was not just a pastime but was carried out on estate land, which included Muirfield and Gullane Links. Today Winton is the family home of Sir Francis and Lady Ogilvy.
Winton is a wonderfully varied and beautiful estate of over 2,000 acres of rolling East Lothian countryside and forests.
They provide a wide range of entertaining and challenging activities from clay pigeon shooting and falconry, to their very own Winton Highland Games, wine and champagne tasting and whisky tasting. This exclusive use venue is very close to Edinburgh and all the attractions of Scotland's capital.
Glenkinchie Distillery, Scotland's only lowland malt is a five minute drive away, some of the most famous golf courses in Scotland are 20 minutes away and the Scottish Borders are immediately to the south, giving access to the River Tweed, Hawick cashmere mills and a mass of historic houses and castles.
