Dochfour House, set in mature parklands, boasts stunning views over Loch Dochfour and Loch Ness. It has been the ancestral home of the Baillie family since the mid 1400's. The original house was burned down during the Jacobite rebellion of 1745. Legend has it that the Baillie of the time, fleeing the English, lived in a cave in the hill behind the house. The reconstruction of the house began in 1780, and today is a harmonious and beautiful amalgam of Georgian, Edwardian and Victorian architecture. When visiting Dochfour Prince Albert reported to Queen Victoria that it was "beautiful, the house elegant with a fine garden". Above all, it is a family home, and the owners welcome visitors and guests from around the world to share in some of the magic of Dochfour.
Terraced formal gardens with orchards, rose gardens, walled gardens and a water garden go down to the water and are set against a majestic backdrop of rocky cliffs, woods and hill tops. The hill behind Dochfour House rises steeply from the loch with parkland giving way to hardwoods and Scots pine. The higher ground is mainly birchwood, which in turn borders large expanses of open moorland complete with hidden lochs.
The estate therefore offers a wide variety of spectacular scenery and activities such as shooting, fishing, walking, riding, sailing and golfing can be organized on request. Over 50 miles of forestry and hill tracks within the estate provide off-roading opportunities. Dochfour, home to many of Britain’s rarest flora and fauna including ospreys, barn owls, red squirrels and pine martens, is a haven for the nature lover.
