Monday | | Check out of Edinburgh Hotel (preferably the Howard) , collect car and leave the city. Stop off at Direlton Gardens in East Lothian, before lunching in the market town of Haddington at the Waterside Bistro. Then tour the stately home of Lennoxlove (Duke of Hamilton) followed by a tour and tea at Thirlestane Castle in Lauder. Arrive at the Roxburghe Hotel, Kelso in time for dinner and a stroll round the grounds. |
Tuesday | | Visit Paxton House with it's stunning collection of Chippendale furniture, followed by lunch in the charming fishing village of Eyemouth. Then visit either Manderston, the great Edwardian house of Scotland or Mellerstain, the finest example of Adam's architecture. Stop off at Mertoun (Duke of Sutherland) on the way home to explore the walled garden. |
Wednesday | | Visit the ancient Castle of Neidpath, followed by a delicious lunch at the Traquair Arms Hotel in Innerleithen. Then on to Traquair, the oldest inhabited house in Scotland, where the front gates will remain closed until there is another Stuart on the throne of Scotland. On the way home, pop into Kailze gardens or possibly Dawyck Botanic gardens at Stobo. |
Thursday | | A morning tour of Bowhill (Duke of Buccleuch) with it's fabulous Old Masters or Floors Castle (Duke of Roxburghe) on the edge of Kelso. A hearty lunch at Burts Hotel in Melrose, where there is one of the famous Border abbeys. After lunch pop into Monteviot's gardens (Marquis of Lothian) on your way to Jedburgh, a lovely old town with another ruined abbey. |
Friday | | Depart for Edinburgh airport. |
