A Study in Scottish Taste

Art, Architecture and Patronage in 17th and 18th century Scotland. A specialist architectural tour based at Ardgowan Castle and hosted by Lady Shaw Stewart and her sister Caroline Knight.

  • Analysis of an 18th Century Country House

  • A.M - Overview of Scottish Architecture by Lady Shaw Stewart & Caroline Knight. Lunch at Ardgowan with Susan Stewart, guest lecturer. 2.30-3.30pm lecture from Susan Stewart on Gillow of Lancaster, furniture makers. 4.00pm - 5.00pm study of Ardowan's gillow furniture with Susan Stewart. Private dinner at Kelburn Castle with the Earl & Countess of Glasgow.

  • The Baroque in Scotland

  • Tour Drumlanrig (the Duke of Buccleuch & Queensberry). Picnic lunch and visit to Durisdeer Church. Visit Chatelherault, William Adam 1731. Dinner at Ardgowan with guest lecturer David Jones.

  • The Rococo in Scotland

  • 9.30am: Departure for Dumfries House, (The Marquess of Bute). Picnic lunch at Dumfries. View James Boswell's Auchinleck House (Landmark Trust). 6pm to Blairquhan, William Burn 1824, for private visit and dinner with Jamie Hunter Blair.

  • Artists in Context

  • 10.00am-11.00am lecture: The Scottish Interior - Ian Gow, Curator, The National Trust for Scotland. 11.30am-12.30pm lecture: Portrait Painting in Scotland - James Holloway and Ian Gow. 2.30pm-4.00pm lecture: James Holloway - Landscape painting in Scotland. Private dinner at Ardinglas, Robert Lorimer, 1906.

  • Patronage of the Bute family

  • 9.30am: Departure for the Isle of Bute and visit Mount Stuart (the Marquess of Bute). Lecture: The Bute family and collecting. Lunch in Visitor Centre. Dinner at Ardgowan.

  • Edinburgh: A Palace and Country House

  • 9.30am: Departure from Ardgowan. Visit Hopetoun (Marquis of Linlithgow). Private lunch at Caroline Park, 1696 and 1741, with John Parnell. Visit Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh (H.M. The Queen). Stay in Edinburgh at the Howard Hotel.
